Presentation of Curriculum
Classes in the 2025 Summer School will be offered through fully in-person instruction or fully virtual instruction; no hybrid classes will be offered. Please pay careful attention to the time and type of instructional presentation (virtual or in-person). Classes may be offered at a variety of times; see the PowerSchool Registration Portal for specific class meeting times and formats.
Students should anticipate engaging in a total of 4.5 hours of course work each day for each class earning a half credit per semester. This time will be a mix of direct instruction, asynchronous learning activities and homework completion.
If you have any questions at this time, please feel free to email me at matthew_west@whps.org and I will be happy to assist you.
Take care and stay safe.

Decisions on the cancellation of a course due to a lack of enrollment may be made up to two days prior to the start of the course and a full refund will be granted. The Summer School Office will call the home of any students enrolled in a course that is canceled.
Credit Information
All credit courses meet the minimum state requirement for the number of instructional hours offered during the regular school year, and are approved for credit by the West Hartford Board of Education. No credit or grade will be released by the Summer School unless tuition payments and book obligations are paid in full.
All students should check with their school counselor if they plan to take courses for credit toward their local graduation requirements, as some credit courses may require prior approval of the student’s Department Head/Department Supervisor.
Information for Parents
On the first day of school, each student will receive a Student/Parent Handbook and a description of the teacher’s Academic Procedures. Parents will be asked to verify that they reviewed these documents with their child.
Open House for Parents
Parents are invited to a virtual Open House for first semester on the third day of each semester. In-Person classes will offer in-person Open House opportunities and virtual teachers will provide a meeting link for parents to attend a virtual Open House. Open House will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of the class. Once these times are set, information will be shared with families.
Student Attendance
Students in summer school credit bearing courses will be expected to engage in approximately four and a half (4.5) hours of course work per day. Students are expected to attend all full class sessions as scheduled throughout the day. This time allotment makes each summer school day the equivalent of one week of school during regular school year. Summer school attendance policy mandates that excessive absences may lead to course failure and, and therefore, loss of course credit. In short, if students will miss more than one day for a 0.5 credit course, or one (1) class period for a 0.25 credit course in a semester, they should not plan to attend class for credit. Specific attendance requirements will be outlined in the Student-Parent Handbook.
Homework
Students must expect to devote a significant amount of time on homework on a daily basis. Students holding jobs while attending summer school may find it difficult to allocate the time needed to complete their homework.
Virtual Office Hours
Teachers of virtual classes will be available for office hours throughout the week. This time is designed for students to work with staff in a small group setting to answer questions and support student learning. Teachers will share their office hours with students on the first day of class and will post these in Google Classrooms.
Expelled Students
Students currently expelled by a public school district may not attend this Summer School.
Room Assignments for In-Person Classes
Room assignments will be posted on the first day of each semester inside the school entrances. Staff will be there to direct students to the correct rooms.
Student Accommodations - IEPs and 504s
The West Hartford Summer High School is a regular education program. There are no special education services provided and no assigned special education staff during our program. However, we will make reasonable accommodations to meet the educational needs for students who provide the program with a district issued Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a 504.
All parents, even those with students in the West Hartford Public School system, are required to provide the Summer School with a complete copy of the IEP or 504 plan. Accommodations listed in the IEP/504 will not be provided unless the IEP/504 is provided to the Summer School office on or before the second day of classes.
Medical Information
If your child is not enrolled in a Connecticut school, a blue state of Connecticut "Health Assessment Record" must be included with the High School Registration Form prior to enrollment. Forms are available at the Continuing Education Office.
Google Account
Given that classes will be presented through the Google suite (Gmail, Docs, Classroom, etc.) all students will need to access their learning through their WHPS school account. Out of district families will need to sign off on the WHPS Acceptable Use Policy to get a district email. Once you have the email you will be able to fully access your Google Classroom and email.
